Protea Ridge to Port Grosvenor Wrecksite
There are several ways to do this extraordinary trail. A short version of just a few hours and a long making it a full day. The long route is an unforgettable experience. Take a pack lunch and walk inland above the Mbaxene Gorge crossing the river at the secret pools and waterfall. From there follow the animal track all the way overland (about 4km) past small settlements and Pondo huts down to the old Port Grosvenor excavations site. Swim in clear mountain streams on the way as you wind your way down to sea level at the historical wrecksite of the East Indiaman ship, the Grosvenor in 1872. Picnic in the shade of the old excavation ruins and walk home past more secret falls and streams which you crossed earlier inland and now running into the sea. Closer to Kilroe Beach visit the ancient and highly endangered Milkwood Forest along this deserted stretch of coastline before either walking the few Km back to Protea Ridge or have the land cruiser fetch you for a fun ride and last swim at one of the Mbaxene Waterfalls on the way home. Stop off enroute for an ice cold quart of Lager at the Nyauza Tavern.
